January 2008

Dear CSA Work Exchange Candidate:

Thank you for your interest in the Cromwell Valley CSA.  The work exchange program is a powerful way to link the farm & the community.  Work exchange members are an important part of a well-run farm, and have more opportunity to learn about the farm and other members.

Farming can be physically demanding.  Tasks involve bending, lifting, kneeling, and repetition.  Farm experience is not a requirement.  What is more important to us is patience & a willingness to be a part of a community growing its food, even if that takes the form of a simple, repetitive task such as hoeing carefully around tiny carrot sprouts.

While we welcome children, those who require close supervision should not be brought to the farm during your work hours.  Older children in past seasons who accompanied their parents proved to be great workers.  However, if you consider bringing a child and feel that you’d probably spend more time watching the child than working, it would probably be best to make alternate arrangements for childcare for workdays.

Full work exchange members commit to working a minimum of 70 hours throughout the whole season.  This year we are also offering a half-work/half-pay option of working 40 hours and paying $250.00.  Work exchange members are encouraged to come according to a regular schedule. Each work session should last a minimum of one and one-half hours.

We need the most help from our working members during harvest.  We harvest from May until November on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Work runs from around 6 a.m. until 1 p.m., depending on crop yield & the number of people working.  It is strongly preferred that working members come early on harvest days, though it is NOT necessary to show up at 6 AM.  Work exchange members can also come on other regularly scheduled work days or at other times according to prior arrangement with farmers.

Members with work hour commitments are required to complete their work hours by November 15.  We also strongly prefer that work-share and work-exchange members complete at least half their hours by August 1.

If you are able to commit a minimum of 70 hours (full-share), or 40 hour (partial-share + $250.00) over the growing season, please return the enclosed work exchange application to us as quickly as possible.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
The Board of Directors
Cromwell Valley CSA
