Description for Assistant Farmer Position
Cromwell Valley CSA is located in the beautiful 350-acre Cromwell Valley Park within ten minutes of the cultural and educational opportunities of Towson and Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to the CSA the park is home to a children’s garden, educational programs, and a summer camp, as well as an abundance of migratory birds and other wildlife. In 2008 the CSA celebrates its eleventh growing season with four cultivated acres providing certified organic vegetables, herbs, asparagus, and fruit for 127 shareholders. Our emphasis is on growing food in an ecologically sustainable manner, balancing the need for production with caring for the Earth. Our land is divided between row-crop fields, biointensive beds, and perennial crop areas. Fertility is maintained through composting and a multi-year plan for rotation of fields and beds between vegetables and cover crops. . The CSA is seeking one assistant farmer for 2008. The term will begin upon applicant’s arrival and continue till December 31, 2008. The assistant farmer position includes the opportunity for permanent year-round employment. Shared housing and a salary are provided, and produce grown on the farm is available at no cost to the assistant farmer. The amount of the monthly salary will depend on experience. The assistant farmer will share in the farmer’s work which involves all aspects and stages of certified organic vegetable production, including crop planning, seedling production, bed preparation, direct sowing, planting, weeding, tool and equipment maintenance, harvesting, greenhouse management, compost production, bio-intensive and other organic growing methods, plus personnel management and record keeping (particularly with regards to organic certification). Farmers also work with and help to educate CSA shareholders about sustainable agriculture, food production, use, and preservation. Farmers work with the assistance and support of interns and CSA shareholders, and the CSA Board of Directors. The right candidate for the assistant farmer position should have one to two full seasons’ experience growing a crop of diverse organic vegetables.
